Best of Patmos (6,5 hours)
This full day tour starts with a scenic
driving tour of the island of Patmos which is then followed by
the Highlights tour. You also have the chance to enjoy lunch and
free time in the charming village of Chora.
After meeting your driver and private
licensed guide you depart from the port town of Scala and start
with a scenic drive around the island. You will enjoy the
natural beauty of the island's landscape which is comprised
mostly of rocky hills, dozens of small peninsulas reaching out
into the sea, tranquil beaches and many picturesque inlets. On
the north end of the island you see the charming village of
Kambos. Then as you make your way back towards the capital of
the island you will be able to view the beautiful beach of Lambi.
Next you drive to the grotto of St. John.
This small cave, now converted into a beautiful chapel, is where
the Saint lived. He had his revelation and wrote the last book
of the New Testament, the Book of Revelations here. Inside this
splendidly adorned little church you see the stone orifice it is
believe that he used as a pillow.
You continue on to the village of Chora,
with its simple houses and Byzantine churches. It is from here
where you climb steps to the Monastery of St. John the
Theologian. Upon entering the courtyard of this imposing
structure you see the intricate pavement designed with pebbles
and the decorated arches. This ornate little chapel houses
sacred relics which are stored in a silver coated chest. The old
treasury is now a museum which displays a breathtaking
collection of jeweled chalices, crowns, crucifixes, vestments
and old manuscripts dating as far back as 1073.
After visiting the monastery you enjoy a
short walk through the old winding streets of Chora which
provides the opportunity to witness the beautiful old
architecture of Patmos. After your walk you have free time to
explore the village and have lunch on your own.
This afternoon you stop at the three
hundred year old house of the Simandiris family. This
exceptional example of island architecture houses one of the
finest collections of antiques dating from the Russian Empire up
to the Turkish occupation. Among its many treasures are
beautifully gilded mirrors, silverware, paintings, rustic
chandeliers and exquisite brocade furnishings. This visit offers
you an exceptional look into the past.
Looking to the future, its time to return
to the pier.
Note: No shorts or bare shoulders are
permitted in the Monastery. Typically ladies must wear skirts
and are offered a wrap to wear around the waist if a skirt is
not worn. Please come prepared or you may be turned away.
